DOVER
TOUR OF HISTORIC PREFAB HOMES - Paul Tedesco, president of the Dover Historical Society, and his son, Jim, have mapped out an architectural walking tour of the town's E.F. Hodgson Co. prefabricated homes. The map, available online at their website, hodgsonhouses.com, takes folks past the sites of historic Hodgson homes, Hodgson's gravestone, and the company's old factory. The company, which existed in Dover between 1892 and 1944, once advertised itself as "America's First Prefabricator" in mail-order catalogs shipped around the world. Back then, sales of the sectional, ready-cut homes competed with mail-order home giants including Sears Roebuck and Montgomery Ward. Last March, the Tedescos self-published "Portable and Prefabricated Houses of the Thirties," a history of Hodgson and his company. - Anna Fiorentino

Cape Cod Times article "Looking for E.F. Hodgson Houses on Cape Cod, MA"

HODGSON HOMES

Do you own a prefabricated home designed by the E.F. Hodgson Co.? If so, authors Paul and James Tedesco are looking for information on your house. The Tedescos have written a book, "Portable and Prefabricated Houses of the Thirties: The E.F. Hodgson Company 1935 and 1939 Catalogs, An Unabridged Reprint," that includes catalogs, advertisements and blueprints of the Hodgson homes. The pre-World War II styles came before those by Sears and Montgomery Ward. The Tedescos have mapped more than 20 houses in Dover and 48 in Arthurdale, W.Va., but think there could be dozens more on Cape Cod. They hope to continue adding houses to their list at www.hodgsonhouses.com. If you have information on these homes: jtedesco@gis.net or 781-760-2357.

In the latter half of the 19th century and their first half of the 20th century the prefabricated house was created, perfected, and increasingly popular for both its ease and rapidity of construction, uniformity of quality and predictability, as well as its relative inexpensiveness when compared with traditional home construction. The E. F. Hodgson Company of Dover, Massachusetts was one of a number of companies specializing in mail-order catalogs to advertise and sell sectional and ready-cut houses throughout the United States. "Portable And Prefabricated Houses Of The Thirties" is a photomechanically reproduction of the E. F. Hodgson prefabricated housing catalogs for 1935 and 1939. A superbly reproduced and unabridged reprint, this catalog showcases the floor plans and blueprints, as well as providing black-and-white photographs of the completed structures. A seminal contribution to the history of American architecture, "Portable And Prefabricated Houses Of The Thirties" is an essential and very strongly recommended addition to professional and academic library Architectural Studies reference collections.

"The Rebirth of the Hodgson Home" Dover-Sherborn Hometown Weekly

By Abigail Davidson
Hometown Weekly Staff

Paul Tedesco has brought the E.F. Hodgson Company, a corporation that was at one time the backbone of Dover’s economy, back to life. Following the completion of his last project, a photo history of Dover, Tedesco, who currently serves as the President of the Dover Historical Society, wanted to learn more about his hometown history. After six years of research, Tedesco’s catalogue, “Portable and Prefabricated Houses of the Thirties” was released last week at the Historical Society’s annual meeting.
